Proofreading: Corrects typographical, mechanical, and grammatical errors, checks and corrects spelling, punctuation, and formatting. Reserved, generally, for documents and manuscripts that simply need polishing or a final check before publication or submission for publication. Also referred to as a “cleanup” round, which checks for all of the above as well as any new errors that may have been introduced after integrating earlier edits.
Copyediting: Incorporates areas checked in a proofreading pass, but copyediting comes at an earlier stage when content may still have a lot of rough patches. Copyediting also aims to clarify and edit sentence structure, optimizes word choice, looks for consistency in details, verb tense, and style, eliminates passive voice, and so on. Manuscripts may need varying levels of copyediting from a light copyedit (fewer than ten errors per page) to a heavier edit, which may involve some structural editing and reorganization.
Substantive Editing: Is generally a very heavy edit that involves reorganizing, some rewriting, and suggestions for revisions. It aims to clarify, check for consistency in tone and voice, as well as check for logic, flow, and structure.
Developmental Editing: Developmental editing sometimes comes at an early stage in a manuscript where guidance may be used to direct or a shape a work. This can be reserved for rough outlines, sketches, works in progress, and manuscripts or documents that need heavy revamping.
Web Site Development: Rewrites and edits existing content; develops new content, provides a structure and outline for writing the content of your site.
